WAVE ROOF OF NEW
CORK
AIRPORT IS
ALUMINIUM WELDED
|
Aluminium roof welding specialist MR Site Services has recently completed the welding of the curved ÔwaveÕ roof of the new Cork international airport terminal building. Designed as a replacement for the old building, the new Cork airport terminal is double the size, has all the latest facilities and can handle 3 million passengers a year. Once building envelope contractors on the project Prince Cladding BV of Holland had evaluated various options for the roof, they selected MR Site Services for welding the aluminium roof panels together as the best technical solution. Ò We found the method to be really flexible and reasonably priced and we will certainly be using aluminium welding again in the futureÓ, comments Henk Prins of Prince Cladding BV, a company that works on many similar prestigious projects worldwide. |

The massive roof required no less than 1,250 metres of welding including welding around the flashings of the huge roof lights installed. Ò It was a challenging project as we had to cater for thermal expansion issues of the very large aluminium roof panels,Ó explains Melvyn Rowberry, managing director of MR Site Services. Ò Through taking a pro-active approach and visiting the site every two weeks, a quality job was completed against the deadline for the client including the testing of welds once finished. Ó The entire roof welding was completed in just two months and against tight project deadlines.
In addition to the roofing, MR Site Services was also commissioned to supply 700metres of 600mm wide Quantum aluminium walkway. These were pre-made especially for the project at MR Services factory and installed on site by clipping to the standing seams of the roof. The Quantum walkways give access to the roof lights and access points around the roof for future maintenance. The walkway was manufactured and installed in just two weeks.
